Vincent Torrance
When I was first introduced to painting I never really understood what I was doing; I eventually found my way to charcoal. Sketching made me realize that this blank surface is a tool which encouraged me to take my work further, exploring more than just image making. I thought of the page as its own world, it pushed me to focus on composition and shape.
As I moved back to painting I understood that the images being created weren’t fully up to me. These shapes that came from my hands, the way that shading came to me felt as if I had partial control. The objects I painted became second nature, I feel so familiar with them. I lose myself in each painting as if it has its own life. I get to see the images birth, growth and ending. “My body of work is an exploration of composition and repetition. Using simple form and colour allow me to find discomfort in familiarity.”
