Jean Bosco Bakunzi

My work is an ongoing exploration of movement, both the movement we see and the movement we feel. As a self-taught artist born in Kigali, Rwanda and now living in Canada, I create paintings that merge my memories with my present surroundings. Each piece is an attempt to translate the rhythm of life into colour, texture, and form. I paint with instinct. My brushstrokes are often loose, fluid, and musical, guided by emotion rather than strict structure.

This sense of motion allows my figures to act as storytellers. They carry fragments of human experience, joy, struggle, resilience, and the quiet beauty found in everyday moments. Texture is central to this process. By layering acrylics and building tactile surfaces, I create a physical depth that mirrors the emotional depth I aim to reveal. Since moving to Canada, my work has absorbed new influences: the vastness of the landscape, the shifting of seasons, and the softer, reflective pace of Canadian life. These elements blend naturally with the warmth, movement, and cultural memory of my East African roots. The result is a visual dialogue between two worlds, one that continues to shape my identity and my artistic voice. Ultimately, I paint to connect.

I want viewers to feel something familiar in my work, even if the story is not their own. My goal is to create art that moves beyond the canvas—art that breathes, vibrates, and invites people into a shared emotional space. Through colour, movement, and texture, I hope to celebrate the beauty of life and the many stages it brings.
