Avery Lake

Avery Lake is a Swiss-Canadian artist and ethicist whose work explores what remains profoundly human in the Intelligence Age. Ten years after completing a PhD in bioethics, he watched as years of study could be replicated by machines in seconds, which raised a deeper question: what comes after disruption? With academic roots in theology, bioethics, and philosophy across Vancouver, Zurich, Oxford, and Calgary, Lake turned to art to pursue those same ethical questions through visual and participatory forms.

His latest work, Sweet Fix (Triptych), invites viewers to take a lollipop from a jar labeled “Help Yourself!”, a gesture that mirrors the cycle of anticipation, delight, and disappearance depicted across the three panels. Drawing from his research on human enhancement, Lake transforms this simple act of sweetness into a meditation on consumption, memory, and the beauty of what fades.
