Avril Orloff

I’ve had an on-again, off-again relationship with photography ever since I bought my beloved Olympus OM-1 (alas, long gone) in the 1970s. I keep coming back to it because I’ve come to realize that looking at the world through my lens is how I see best.

Photography helps me slow the world down, sharpens my attention, and grounds me in the moment while opening doors to what lies beyond it. In the past few years I've been more and more drawn to abstract and impressionistic work because I want to go beyond what I see to what I sense: the mood beneath the moment, the feeling I can't quite name, the space between what’s visible and what’s felt.

By extending the boundaries of photography beyond the representational, whole new worlds come into view, expanding my sense of what’s possible and enlarging my understanding of what’s real.
