Amila Li

Amila Li is an artist and writer based in East Vancouver, on unceded xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) land. Animated by the constant relocation of her adolescence and young adult life, her photography follows a documentarian impulse toward transience. At

Amila is exhibiting PINE: Everyday Lifescapes, comprising scenes of care, resourcefulness, and love’s ordinary labours. Five years after the emergence of its title image, the collection charts the artist’s interiority during her late twenties, a period bookended by news of her father’s reincarceration and her personal leave from graduate school. PINE takes inspiration from the soft wood of evergreen trees toward an exploration of socioeconomic desire and ache—especially as they impress materially, temporally, and geographically.
