Mardell Rampton

Working in cloth and watercolours, Mardell Rampton uses subtle colour and texture to create ethereal paintings exploring themes of serenity and sanctuary. Rampton’s sensitivity to light, motion and sound inform her use of the calming hues of the Pacific Northwest.

Mardell’s cloth paintings are sculptural, with contours created by interactions between the tactile nature of cloth and threads stitched by domestic sewing machine and by hand. Each cloth painting is mounted on a custom metal frame designed by the artist. Her watercolours converse in a symbiotic dialog with the cloth works, both inviting a slowing of the breath, a pause.

Born in Alberta, Rampton grew up on Vancouver Island, and now lives and works in Delta. Completing a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science at the University of Victoria, she worked as a software engineer before becoming a studio artist in 2014. Her artworks have been exhibited in Europe, U.S.A. and across Canada.
