Joey Mallet

These paintings were painted over the last several months, an exploration of purely abstract expression. They begin with random marks, shapes, line, and color, gradually refined, to describe a vision of the world based on my personal experience, both as an artist and a human.

Earlier layers are buried in an archaeological dig of superimposed strata, providing a foundation for a work that could not be arrived at any other way. The past two divisive (pandemic) years have given much time for reflection, dealing with the unknown, and feeling a great cynicism rising in myself and others. By starting a painting in such a random way, not knowing how it will end, which direction it will take, I validate to myself that love and beauty are still accessible on the canvas that I create.

I wish to extend this optimistic view to you, the viewer.
