Ryan Stella was born and raised in rural Terrace, British Columbia. Throughout adolescence he was largely self-taught, until pursuing formal education in 2013, and subsequently earned a BFA at Emily Carr University. His practice mainly focuses on video and film-making. He also works in the mediums of writing, drawing, sculpture, and photography.
I used to have lofty ideas backing my practice. Over the last few years I realized that efforts to define myself stultified my ability to make art. So I returned to the basic function of an artist; to create and showcase work. Any potential meaning is found much after it has come into being. Interpretation stumbles after inspiration.
