Avril Orloff
I’ve been interested in photography for decades, but in the past few years it’s become my primary mode of artistic expression. I find photography the most effective way of grounding myself in the moment and attuning myself to the world around me. Looking through my lens I see things differently. I find beauty in unexpected places. Things I don’t normally notice suddenly become fascinating and vivid. Things I think of as “ordinary” suddenly become extraordinary.
At one level, I simply enjoy documenting the small epiphanies of everyday life: a tiny detail that contains worlds, a fleeting moment captured in time. But I also try to go beyond what meets the eye to convey a larger reality. By extending the boundaries of photography beyond the representational, whole new worlds come into view, expanding my sense of what’s possible and enlarging my understanding of what’s real.
